Is there really a difference between American and French oak barrels?

Commemorate Independence Day and Bastille Day this July. Eden Canyon Vineyards’ ‘’Tribute to Oak’’ weekends pitches American versus French: our 2005 ‘’Estate’’ Cabernet Sauvignon (aged in American oak barrels) against our 2005 ‘’Reserve’’ Cabernet Sauvignon (aged in French oak barrels). Both wines were produced from our estate vineyard during the same vintage year, and by the same winemakers. The only differences are their oak casks and the color of medals they won.

The Sense Lab: Spice Up Your Life and Your Grill

plus, "Top Chef Masters" in the original "Top Chef Kitchen"

Paulding & Co.Become your own master: learn about and hone your olfactory senses with spices and wine while enjoying a pre-Memorial Day barbecue dinner. Participants can also make a magic rub and wine pairing of their own with Chef/Owner Terry Paulding and Winemaker/Owner Elaine Villamin in the Paulding & Company Kitchen (set-location for “Top Chef” San Francisco and Clint Eastwood’s upcoming movie “Hereafter”). Stay and watch "Top Chef Masters" knowing you just cooked in a "Top Chef" kitchen too.

This inaugural “Sense Lab” will concentrate on two facets of spice—elusive flavors in wine, and spices that make a great rub for Memorial Day barbecue. You’ll go home with an envelope of your custom blend after doing some interesting experiments with smell and taste, some of them enhanced by the absence of sight—you’ll be wearing blindfolds! Can you identify the olfactory keys to the flavors? And to celebrate our inaugural “Sense Lab”, our friends at Star Meats will be offering special pricing for their luscious and organic cuts of meat for your holiday weekend.

The evening schedule:
7-8PM – Lab: Olfactory tests, blind wine and spice tasting. Participants will be blindfold while trying different spices and wines.
8-9PM – Dinner: Baby-back ribs, herb potato salad with spring peas, and coleslaw.
9PM – Experiment: Make your own inspired spice rub before the Big Show.
10PM – The show begins! Pull up a chair and have some fun cheering for your favorite chef.

Enjoy the fall grape harvest by joining Eden Canyon Vineyards and our fellow barrel toppers. On Oct. 17th we are celebrating Franklin Square Wine Bar stepping out of their diapers on their big "2-0" anniversary. $12 to the bambino will get you almost all you can eat spit roasted and grilled pork to be enjoyed with many barrel tastings and new releases. See what we gave birth to in 2007 straight from the barrel. And for those of you who know Rick and Elaine, the 2-year-old bantering will continue during the barbecue. Excerpt from Rick's last email: "Eden Canyon’s too-cool-for-school winemaker, Elaine Villamin, was a no-show for dollar tasting a few weeks back, but I harnessed the twin powers of guilt and intimidation to persuade her to reschedule for this week. This time around I’m sure she’ll show. If she knows what’s good for her."

Eden Canyon Vineyards Open House Weekend

April 25-26 2009, 12pm-5pm Saturday and Sunday

1919 Calf Canyon Highway
Creston, CA 93432

Dad rarely leaves home. He's got the vineyard and winery, sheep, the target range, and Los Padres National Forest. Often times, we have no idea where he is, and if you're unfortunate enough to come when we're not expecting guests, the gate is locked. So, on Saturday April 25 and Sunday April 26th, from noon to 5pm, we will be holding an open house and leaving the gate open. As we say here at Eden Canyon Vineyards: "There's a story in every bottle." And now, you can see for yourself exactly where our story begins - with Dad and our vineyard.

When you visit our vineyard in Creston, CA, you'll see the terroir that gives our wines their flavors. Elaine and Danny Villamin will be your hosts and guides, answering your questions and providing first-hand winemaking knowledge as you stroll through the vines and barrels.

Cost: $10, includes a tour of the vineyard as well as a vertical wine and barrel tasting. The open house is free to Bottle Brigade members.

Vertical tasting includes:

Open House tickets can be purchased for $10 at www.edencanyon.com/buy. Tickets can also be purchased at the vineyard on the day of the event.

Every year, Dad spends thousands of hours in the heat, rain, and (this year), frost, tending his grapes for beauty and taste. And when they’re at their ultimate peak, we pick them and crush them to a pulp.

This harvest season, the vineyard manager will have his say. Dad's bringing our grapes for us to see (and then we can squash them to a pulp). We’ll have a buffet dinner, drink, and even run some tests to see if they’re ready to pick. And if you’re a true cork dork, stay longer and we’ll discuss why this year’s motto is: “small berries are better.”

Miracle Fruit and Wine Tasting

Saturday, August 23, 2008

4:00 pm to 6:00 pm

Miracle fruit is more than a grape?

In June, I went to a reading of "The Fruit Hunters" and tasted miracle fruit. It's hard to describe and something you have to experience- flavors change making sour things taste sweet, lemons like lemonade, and according to a NY Times article, Tabasco sauce tastes like doughnut glaze. It was intriguing so we're going to reproduce the NY Times tasting and pour barrel samples of our future releases.

A Nipa Hut in the Vineyard: Wines by Filipino-Americans

You are invited to attend a unique wine-tasting experience:
A Nipa Hut in the Vineyard: Wines by Filipino-Americans

There's a story in every bottle of wine -
The Filipino-American story takes us from the days when Filipinos were a migrant labor force harvesting grapes in California's wine growing regions, to the present day, where Filipino-Americans fully participate in the wine tradition as owners and managers of their own vineyards and wineries.

Don't miss this chance to hear a story, see a unique perspective on a California tradition, learn about wines, and have fun!

WHAT
“A Nipa Hut in the Vineyard: Wines by Filipino-Americans” -- a wine-tasting event showcasing premiere wineries and vineyards from owned and managed by Filipino-Americans.

Attendees will taste flights of California and Oregon wines paired with Filipino foods. Featured wines include pairings from Eden Canyon Vineyards, Silver Oak Cellars, Austin Robaire Vintners, and more. Winemaker Elaine Villamin will discuss the different personalities of each wine and the pairings.

WHY
The number of Filipino-owned wineries is increasing. Working for years as farm workers, Filipinos have long been rooted in the wine industry and have now established their own wineries and vineyards. Intended to be fun and informative, Elaine will discuss stories behind the wine and the Filipino-Americans who made them.

MORE WINE
Our 2003 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is ready to release, so we'll be pouring
it alongside our 2002 Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon.

Also... My comrade at a neighboring winery, Chumeia Vineyards, will be
pouring with us! As luck would have it, John Stipicevich will be in town and
will treat us to a cornucopia of his wine. Come by and try his pinot noir,
syrah, chardonnay, pinot blanc, and--get this--cabernet sauvignon. See, we
both have San Francisco Chronicle Competition Silver Medal Winners. We want
to know who truly is the winner between us so you get to judge and declare a
winner.

And we want to buy your vote! Place a buck in the glass next to the wine you
like. All the votes go to the Grace Asuncion Scholarship Fund, and we'll
even match them. (OK, one of us might put a little bit more in the kitty to
sway the votes since really, it's all about what you like and not medal
winners.)

Please RSVP so we can ensure enough wine for everyone.

2003 Vino Filipino!

Wine and Filipino cuisine? Of course! At this event, we will pair wine and highlight the global influences in Filipino cuisine. Come by, have tastes of Filipino cuisine, drink wine from small production vineyards, meet the amazing chefs, and have a great time.

For me, this is a dream come true....My first Filipino food and wine pairing was in New York City with Romy and Amy Dorotan at Cendrillon Restaurant. They changed my perception of Filipino cuisine forever and I am thrilled that they are coming all the way from NYC to treat us. A mailing list member told me about Va de Vi Restaurant in Walnut Creek. I took her advice and went to Va de Vi and was blown away. We're so lucky to have Va de Vi Executive Chef Kelly Degala not only in the East Bay, but also ready to treat us to his art and knowledge.

There are limited seats available, so please RSVP.

Date: Sunday, April 3, 2005
Time: 3:00 - 5:00PM
Location: Lavanda Restaurant, 185 University Ave., Palo Alto
Sponsors: Eden Canyon Vineyards, Cendrillon Restaurant (NYC), Merrill Lynch, Hanson, Bridgett, Marcus, Vlahos & Rudy LLP, Lavanda Restaurant, and Chumeia Vineyards

About the Dorotans and Cendrillon Restaurant:
According to The New York Times, “Filipino fair is masterfully tweaked” at Cendrillon. Named best “Pan-Asian Restaurant” by New York Magazine, Cendrillon serves traditional Filipino and original Pan-Asian dishes in SoHo, New York City.

About Kelly Degala and Va de Vi Restaurant: “Va de Vi .. gives diners in Walnut Creek a reason not to go to San Francisco for good food...” wrote San Francisco Chronicle’s Michael Bauer. One of Sunset Magazine’s “Favorite Wine Bars Near You” in 2004, Va De Vi and Executive Chef Kelly Degala create cuisine that feature the flavors of France, Spain, Italy and the Philippines.

About Lavanda Restaurant: Winner of the 2003 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, Lavanda Restaurant and Wine Bar presents Mediterranean cuisine and award-winning wines in downtown Palo Alto. Lavanda serves sustainable farmed ingredients such as hormone-free Niman Ranch meats and Green Leaf produce.

About the Villamin Family and Eden Canyon Vineyards:
There’s a story in every bottle of wine. Eden Canyon Vineyard’s story began in Manila and continues in the Paso Robles Appellation. The Villamin Family planted their estate vineyard of Cabernet Sauvignon in 1996 and released their first vintage in November 2004. Recent accolades includes medals in the 2005 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and a selection for the 47th Annual Grammy Awards Gift Basket.

About Chumeia Vineyards: Handcrafting small batches of Zinfandel, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Viognier, and other varietals, Chumeia Vineyards is owned and operated by the next generation of winemakers who believe that winemaking begins in the vineyards. Winemaker Lee Nesbitt’s style focuses on preserving a grape varietal’s characteristics, making Chumeia’s wines true and approachable. Recent awards include gold medals at the 2005 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
